Since the beginnings of music education in the United States, teaching and learning in music has been dominated by notation driven performance on traditional Western instruments. unfortunately for this model, technological advances in sound production and reproduction have greatly changed the way society in general experiences music. In light of these changes, the music education profession could stand to benefit from rethinking its role in American culture.
