» The Bachelor of Science in Music Education is designed to prepare students as practitioners in the field. Practical experience is the underlying value in all courses and field experiences. Students receive direct experience with the k-12 schools beginning early in the degree program. As students progress through the curriculum, the amount of practice teaching at all levels of instruction expands, culminating in a robust, semester-long, student-teaching experience. This degree program challenges and prepares students to not only embrace the traditions of music education in the schools, but also to incorporate new potentials for the future.

» The Master of Arts in Music Education is intended to empower students as sophisticated consumers of research related to music education practice and theory. This degree is offered as an "at-a-distance" program and can be completed away from the University. Courses are offered during both the fall and spring semesters each year as well as during summers so that music teachers can schedule course work for times that are most convenient for them. See the TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS information sheet for more information about the degree. Admission requirements include a bachelors degree in music or music education, previous teaching experience, and letters of reference. All MA students are required to obtain a passing grade on music theory and music history examinations. On-line tutorials are available at the following links: HISTORY INFO, and THEORY SAMPLE TEST, and WEBLINKS. The exams can be taken at-a-distance. Click HERE for information on how to take these exams away from the Tampa campus. HERE is the expected rotation of on-line course offerings.

» The Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education is the terminal degree in our field. At the University of South Florida, this program is intended for the aspiring pinnacle leader in music education research, teaching, and administration. The curriculum prepares the student to engage in original research in music education and related fields (arts education, music technology, music psychology, etc.). In coordination with faculty mentors, the student has great flexibility in designing a program that fits his/her interests and strengths. Admission requirements include an interview with the music education faculty and the submission of writing samples and GRE scores. A limited number of fellowships and scholarships are available to outstanding students. HERE is the expected rotation of PhD courses. PhD applicants may be qualified for up to $500 to travel to USF Tampa Campus for a campus visit and interview. Email cvfung@arts.usf.edu for details.
